A Test of Your Game...
Located close to the Gulf of Mexico, course designer Arthur Hills' plan was to allow the elements to play a part of the course.
In this area, tropical breezes come through from the north and the northeast, giving the golf course a links style feel of play. You're probably going to use every club in your bag, every day. Wind always enters into shots. Depending upon the direction of the wind, some par-3s one day could play a wedge one day and a six-iron the next.
The flexibility of the multiple tee boxes permits all levels of golfers to enjoy each course regardless of handicap. The strict agronomical standards set by The Club guarantees to exceed each players expectations.
During the fall, winter and early spring months, prevailing winds keep the temperatures warmer, but with those winds the challenge of controlling your shot increases.
Mr. Hills is the type of designer who allows you a couple holes to “warm up” into your game. Then gradually, the challenges increase. So pick the tee and the distance that you're going to enjoy: The further you go back, the challenges become greater – not just in yardage but also in certain carries to certain greens, over lakes to raised greens, etc. In his total design, Mr. Hills has not just built a challenging golf course, but he's enhanced everything around it. So for the golfer who's out there for the beauty as well as the game, this is the course.
The Board mandates the golf course be maintained in near-tournament condition year-round.
"Years ago my Dad said that he believed the south nine, The Club, was the best nine I had ever done.
It does have a strong, memorable pattern of holes, part of 27 very good holes."

Three Nines: Fun and challengeing for all golfers.
The three nines are named “The Club;” “The Pelican,” and “The Bay.”
In an area of Florida that's flat, Mr. Hills designed some rolling terrain without making it look odd in the existing setting. The greens are unusually shaped, with subtle elevation changes that make them very challenging. At The Club Pelican Bay, our fairways are generous for your tee-shots, but there are many bunkers or hazards to be negotiated for errant shots. Though the three nines are flat by “Northern course standards,” architect Arthur Hills contoured the fairways which produce many uneven lies.
The fairways are 419 TiffBermuda; the greens are TiffEagle.
You always have the option to play safe, but …
for the aggressive golfer, hazards will always have to be negotiated. When putting from 20 feet, the player will negotiate uphill, downhill, and side hill lies. Golfers my stay area of the subtleties throughout the course.
Let's compare our best par-5's. We've got three!
That's one of the advantages of having three nines! For example, a golfer may ask at a regular club, ‘What's your best par-5?' Here at The Club Pelican Bay, you triple your enjoyment!
An Arthur Hills signature, the par-5s are not always long. They're always tempting! So the better player, if driving the ball well, will be tempted to go for the greens in two. You've got a chance to make an eagle, but if you miss the green, you could suffer.

All of The Club Pelican Bay's par-5s have water and deep bunkers. They give you the chance to go at it, but you're going to have to live with your decisions.
Bay #2
Off the tee you're negotiating water, a bunker and out-of-bounds left and right. Your second shot best make it 170 to 200 yards, to lay up right-center of the fairway, leaving you 100 – 150 yards to a much protected green with water and bunkers. Out of bounds waits beyond the green.
Pelican #6
Very similar to Bay #2 because each shot requires touch and finesse, with hazards lurking throughout the hole!
Club #6
The drive is not as demanding as others, but as you get closer to the green the challenges magnify significantly. With a long drive you'll have a great chance to reach in two, but this carry is at least 225 yards uphill over water the entire way to a long and narrow green. The smart shot is to lay up to the right center of the fairway giving you 90 to 140 yards over water to a narrow green.
It's the kind of hole where you're going to have to turn the ball a little right to left off the tee. For the low handicapper, you'll be very tempted to go for the green, which will require you to fly the ball over water onto an elevated green, that from front to back is very narrow.
Be Careful Out There!
No matter which course you choose to begin play, you need to manage your golf game. If you try to play someone else's game, you're probably going to suffer.
Number 7 on “The Pelican” course is a great par-3. But depending on where the pin is located, and wind direction, you might not go at the pin.
Number 9 on “The Club” course – the original 18th hole — is The Club Pelican Bay's toughest hole and most difficult green. Some of the difficulty is the length; it's a par-4. You're hitting a little bit from left to right off the tee. Then the next shot could be anywhere from 160 to 200 yards, over a lake to a raised green that's unusually shaped and well bunkered. It's a great finishing hole, whether it's you're ninth hole or 18th hole.
As for the green, the challenge is where you place your ball and where the pin is. The wind can play a big role in how you play this green, 3-putting this green is common.
